SIX INTERNET EXCHANGE OPERATORS TO LOSE LICENSES OVER CALL MASKING
No fewer than six internet exchange operators in the country are likely to lose their operating licenses over call masking.
It has been reported that the Nigerian Communications Commission (the “NCC”) will impose the maximum possible penalties on the any of its licenses implicated in the practice of masking of international telephone calls. It further stated that the operating licenses of some of the interconnect exchange and other licensees involved in the practice could either be revoked or suspended.
Call masking is the act of concealing or disguising international calls coming into a country and presenting them as local in order to make profits from the difference between local and international calls. Call masking technique is used by individuals or companies to keep personal phone numbers of businesses and individuals private.
Apart from the consequential loss of revenue for licensed local telecom operators from international calls since such are being disguised as local calls, this practice also has some negative security implications.
